Zendesk vs Gorgias for a Shopify Store: Is Gorgias Worth the Price?

Your Shopify store has outgrown a shared inbox. You have trialled both Zendesk and Gorgias, and the Gorgias quote looks roughly three times higher for your team. The Gorgias demo was slicker for order lookups and refunds, but you are not sure that is worth paying so much more for, or whether you are even comparing the prices correctly.

Often you are not. Zendesk charges per agent. Gorgias charges by the volume of tickets your team handles, with unlimited seats on its larger plans. So Gorgias looks expensive for a small team handling a lot of tickets and cheap for a larger or seasonal team handling fewer tickets per person. The right choice comes from two numbers, tickets per month and agents on shift, plus how much of your support work involves changing Shopify orders.

How each one charges

Zendesk lists Suite Team at $55 per agent per month and Suite Professional at $115 per agent per month on annual billing, with a basic Support Team plan at $19. AI agents are priced on an outcome basis: Zendesk says you pay per automated resolution, meaning requests resolved by the AI agent without escalation.

Gorgias prices by billable tickets. According to its own plan guide (updated May 2026), Starter is $10 a month for 50 tickets, Basic $60 for 300, Pro $360 for 2,000 and Advanced $900 for 5,000, with Pro and above including unlimited agent seats. A ticket is billable when a customer messages you and your team interacts with it; several messages in one conversation count once, and automated replies that fully resolve an issue are not billed. Overage is $0.40 a ticket on Starter and Basic and $0.25 on Pro. AI Agent is sold separately, and conversations it resolves do not count as billable tickets.

Prices and plan limits change frequently, and both vendors discount for annual billing, so confirm current figures before signing.

A worked comparison

Take three hypothetical Shopify stores, using the list prices above and ignoring add-ons.

Store Zendesk Suite Team Gorgias
3 agents, 1,500 tickets a month 3 × $55 = $165 Pro: $360
8 agents in peak season, 1,800 tickets a month 8 × $55 = $440 Pro: $360
3 agents, 4,000 tickets a month 3 × $55 = $165 Pro plus 2,000 overage tickets: $860, or Advanced: $900

The “triple the price” complaint is real for the first and third stores. It reverses for the second. At the Pro plan price, Gorgias matches Zendesk Suite Team at roughly six to seven agents. At Suite Professional pricing, the crossover comes between three and four agents.

So the useful metric is tickets per agent. A lean team clearing a high volume pays more on Gorgias. A team that adds temporary staff for Black Friday, or that gives warehouse and marketing staff helpdesk access, pays less.

What the extra money buys on Gorgias

Gorgias is built around ecommerce, particularly Shopify. Agents see customer order history next to the conversation and can take common order actions without switching to the Shopify admin. For a store where a large share of tickets are “where is my order,” address changes, cancellations and refunds, that saves time on every ticket.

Its rules and automations are also oriented to ecommerce scenarios, and it brings in social comments and messages as tickets, which matters for brands selling heavily through Instagram or Facebook.

Zendesk can connect to Shopify through integrations, and it is a far broader platform: more mature routing, reporting, knowledge base, telephony and workforce features, and it fits companies whose support covers more than one sales channel or product line.

When each is the better choice

Gorgias tends to fit when:

  • You sell mainly through Shopify and most tickets relate to orders.
  • You have many occasional or seasonal agents.
  • Social commerce is a large support channel.
  • You want your support team inside a tool that looks like your store, with minimal setup.

Zendesk tends to fit when:

  • A small, efficient team handles high ticket volumes.
  • You sell across several platforms, marketplaces or B2B channels.
  • You need advanced routing, SLAs, voice or detailed reporting.
  • Other departments, such as IT or HR, might use the same platform later.

Cut ticket volume before choosing either

On Gorgias, every avoidable ticket costs money. On Zendesk, avoidable tickets cost agent time. Either way, the cheapest ticket is the one that never arrives.

  • Put order tracking links in every shipping email and on the order status page.
  • Answer shipping times, returns and sizing on product and checkout pages, not only in an FAQ.
  • Use self-service flows for order status and returns.
  • Review your top ten ticket reasons monthly and fix the cause of at least one.

We walked through that process in how to fix repetitive customer support emails. A store that removes a quarter of its tickets can move down a Gorgias tier, which changes the comparison above.

Five questions to settle the decision

  1. How many billable tickets did we handle in our last three months, including peak season?
  2. How many people need helpdesk access, and how many at peak?
  3. What share of tickets require changing a Shopify order?
  4. Which channels matter: email, chat, social, voice, SMS?
  5. If we added an AI agent, how would each vendor charge us, and what counts as a resolution?

Run your own numbers through the table above with those answers. The winner is usually obvious.

Help with the tool, and the tickets inside it

Choosing a helpdesk is the smaller part of good ecommerce support; handling the tickets well is the larger part. AB7 Solutions provides customer support outsourcing for ecommerce brands, with trained agents who work inside your Zendesk or Gorgias account, and builds AI chatbots, AI agents and workflow automation to reduce repetitive tickets before they reach a person. We can also set up integrations and automations in the helpdesk you choose. We do not resell either platform, so our only interest is in which one fits your volume.

Send us your monthly ticket volume, team size and main ticket types, and we will help you work out which helpdesk and support model makes sense.
