You can evaluate an Indian development team’s quality before you sign by testing seven things: how they review code, how a feature reaches production, how clearly they communicate, whether they will run a paid pilot, what their references say, how they handle a deliberately ambiguous requirement, and how long their people stay. None of these needs you to be technical yourself — they need you to ask the right questions and watch how the team answers. Here is the checklist.

1. How code gets reviewed

Ask who reviews code before it merges. A strong team names pull-request review by a senior engineer and an automated CI check on every commit. “We just push to main” is a warning sign.

2. How a feature reaches production

Ask them to walk one feature from ticket to live. A real answer names branching, review, automated tests, a QA pass and a deploy step. A vague answer means the process does not exist.

3. How they communicate

On the first call, notice the English clarity, whether they ask sharp questions about your requirement, and whether they push back on anything unrealistic. The team that asks good questions early is the team that delivers with less rework.

4. Whether they will run a paid pilot

A confident team will take a small, paid, bounded piece of work so you can judge them on output rather than a sales deck. AB7 encourages a scoped pilot for exactly this reason.

5. References you can actually check

Ask for two clients in a similar domain and a Clutch or G2 profile. Call one. A track record you cannot verify is not a track record.

6. How they handle ambiguity

Give them a deliberately under-specified task in the pilot and watch what they do. A strong team asks clarifying questions; a weak one guesses and builds the wrong thing.

7. How long their people stay
